Cats are God's way of reminding us that we are not so important afterall.

If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man, but it would
deteriorate the cat.

look into, not through us.  God gave us cats

He also gave us cats to pet so that we do
not become overly depressed.  Amen!

God-shaped hole

John 15:5   “I am the vine, you are the branches.  The
one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit,
because you can do nothing without Me.”
(eSword;c.
2005)  Note:  this isn’t boasting, simply a statement of
fact.

Romans 3:24   All are justified and made in right
standing with God freely by His grace through the
redemption which is in Jesus Christ.
(B47;pg 1026)

Do you remember when you had a God shaped hole in
your life?  What did you try to fill it with?  Was it drugs,
alcohol, work, money or adulation?  Did you engage in
unhealthy relationships or obsessive/compulsive
behaviors to fill the void?  You can fill in the blanks
yourself because there are probably as many variations
on this theme as there are people, but there is
commonality.

Did you discover, like I did, that nothing but God fits?  Did
you discover that you could pour stuff into that hole as
though it were a bottomless pit until only God filled it to
overflowing?

Dear Reverend Sean,

I came upon your website while I was searching for
some comfort and knowledge. I am very sad. My cat
was killed by my dog yesterday and I am having a very
hard time with it. I have 5 cats that I have had for 10
years, and I love them all very much. They are a mother
cat that was abandoned 11 years ago at my house, and
her kittens that are now 10 years old. There was
something very special about  Minx, she was very small
and delicate and absolutely the most innocent of all
creatures that I have ever known. I have had dozens of
cats in my life, and I have lost some of them over the
years due to sickness and old age, but this was a
horrible senseless tragedy. My dog had known her for
over 4 years and I had no reason to think that this
would ever happen. They were in the yard together
along with my other cats, and my dog shook her to
death. My dog is not a vicious breed, border collie mix,
and I still don't understand this. I took my dog to the
humane society today, which is something that I have
never done and am very against. I had an almost
supernatural rapport with Minx, and she trusted me to
take care of her, and I'm just sick about the way she
died. I am having a very hard time, I cannot imagine
ever getting over this pain. I miss her so much, and I
feel that I let her down. Please help me. I need to make
some sense of this.

Sincerely,

XXX

my response ...

XXX,

You will get over your pain, and you will find another
precious kitten like Minx.  What makes loving those we
care about such a bittersweet experience is that we
cannot hold onto them forever.  I know you feel
responsible for what happened.  And, it's OK to mourn,
but not to quit living.  Do me a favor and read
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 because, trust me, for everything
there is a season.  There are also seasons that come
after and heal our wounds.  Spring always heals a
brutal winter.  You will find that there is a "time to mourn
and a time to laugh."

There are some things we cannot completely wrap our
minds and hearts around.  Just watch the news ... very
little in this world can be explained in a word or two, and
pat answers don't cut it either... it seems unfair, doesn't
it?.  Remember that in the Gospel of Matthew Christ
said that it rains and it shines on the just and the unjust
alike.  Things happen because we are willing to remain
alive in a world that is a home to rainstorms and
sunshine.  They are natural cycles.

Senseless killing is a situation we cannot control and it
leaves us feeling helpless.  It isn't your fault, nor is it the
dog's fault.  I would say that in the animal kingdom [at
least] it is not personal, and not premeditated.  I know
that isn't much comfort, but we try to domesticate and
adapt them to our lives.  Generally we are successful,
but occasionally they revert to their origins.  Human
beings do it too, but we have choices.  For us I would
call it sin, for animals, I would say it is their natural state.

Any time something we care about dies, it's painful,
moreso when it is something we hold very dear.  I would
recommend praying to God in the name of Jesus Christ
and asking for forgiveness.  Yes, ask to forgive yourself
because you are taking responsibility, and blaming
yourself for a situation that was ultimately outside your
ability to manage.  Be honest and ask yourself what you
could have done to prevent what happened? Would
you have given up the good times?  No, I didn't think so.
Forgive the dog, as well, but know that it doesn't really
understand what it did, and has no understanding of
the consequences it is undergoing.  It was being a dog
for better or worse.  However, since your dog did show
signs of unprovoked violence, it was probably wise not
to create the potential for it to reoccur.

We take chances everyday.  Dogs and cats, even lions
and lambs can do well together at times, other times
not.  You can't quit living or enjoying your animals, nor
can you cease taking risks that make you happy.  For a
little while mourn and cry, then go back out and live.
Don't die emotionally because you lost a friend.  Make
another friend.

[XXX], the only way to keep life from happening is to
bow out of life, and that isn't really an option.  If
something takes a life, then try to give life.  Always give,
and don't be afraid to take.  Life is a balancing act ...
maybe a better analogy is this:  it is like juggling
chainsaws and watermelons.  Do it long enough and the
odds are better than average that something unforseen
will happen ... someone will get hurt and, if you look
closely, someone will be blessed.  It is a natural cycle,
and death is a vital part of it.

You've given, you've taken ... now go out and give
again.

Oh yeah, I have cats as you can see on my site, and if
something happened to either of them I would be
crushed.  Those furry friends are truly family members
and I do not underestimate the impact of such a loss.
Don't try to replace Minx; find another soul mate.

God bless you, and I hope this helped.  I said a prayer
of healing for you.  You will be fine in God's time.
